What you need to know about Cambridge Standing Tall 2024

  • November 2, 2023
  • News

In less than six months, Cambridge will become the home of 32 large giraffes. Not real ones, unfortunately, but every 8ft sculpture will have a unique personality as they’ll all be decorated by a different artist. Some of these artists are local to Cambridgeshire and others are coming from further afield in the UK. Presently, we can’t reveal any designs, but in previous years First Copy has sponsored Rex_Machina, a robot T. rex and Honey the cow who had delicate bees painted on her. So, as you can see, any design is possible!

We can’t wait for you to get involved in this event – because that’s what it’s all about: community! The hope of this trail is to get people out and about, taking in Cambridge sights. It’s going to lift people’s spirits by brightening up streets and making people smile with inspiring pieces of public art that support charity.

Of course, there are some things we can’t discuss for the sake of secrecy, but in the meantime, let’s answer some of your questions that we can talk about!

What is Cambridge Standing Tall?

Cambridge Standing Tall is the name given to 2024’s city art trail. It will be the third one First Copy has had the pleasure of sponsoring! The funds raised will go to local charity, Break (who we often fundraise for!).

If you want to look at Cambridge’s previous art trail, search for Cows About Cambridge 2021.

Who are Break?

Break supports young people entering care, in care, and leaving care. They do brilliant work and you can follow them on:

  • Website
  • TikTok
  • LinkedIn
  • X
  • Facebook
  • Instagram

Who is organising the trail?

These trails are brought to you by Break in partnership with Wild In Art. There are many people working behind the scenes to make this happen.

The principal partner is Cambridge BID and Alan Boswell Group is the presenting partner.

When is Cambridge Standing Tall starting and finishing?

The art trail commences in Spring 2024. It will run for 10 weeks from mid-March and, finish at the start of June. But that won’t be the end of the giraffes! Like usual, there will be a charity auction where anyone can bid on the sculptures. All the money raised will go to Break to support young people in Cambridgeshire.

Is Cambridge Standing Tall an environmentally friendly event?

Wild in Art’s statement: “We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and continually improving our environmental performance as an integral and fundamental part of our business strategy and operating methods.”

The following is a list of the event’s environmental commitments:

  • Wherever possible, they are commissioning local artists and using UK suppliers and manufacturers for the sculptures and merchandise
  • For every large sculpture exhibited, three trees will be planted by them to help recover the Atlantic Rainforest in Brazil as part of a project by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and their partners at Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas
  • Break are reusing the concrete plinths from the previous Cows about Cambridge trail in 2021
  • The sculptures don’t go to landfill. Instead, the artwork is auctioned and displayed

What animal is Cambridge Standing Tall using?

Giraffes! There will be 32 large sculptures that will roam the streets of Cambridge. But before they get here, 60 ‘Mini Gs’ – designed by local school children – will be displayed indoors in buildings such as shopping centres, museums, shop windows and libraries as part of Break’s Learning & Community Programme.

Who is designing First Copy’s sponsored giraffe?

The talented artist, MrASingh! He’s very active on social media and we encourage you to follow him on these platforms so that you don’t miss out on his wonderful work and community involvement:

  • LinkedIn
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • X

So get ready for an exciting new sculpture by MrASingh! It is going to be a mix of different materials and abstract art. It’ll be full of shiny metallics and bright colours, and the artist is making sure it feels interesting to the touch with lots of textures. The main idea behind the piece is to be proudly unique, so no part of the sculpture will look or feel the same.

We’ll be sharing a few sneak peeks in the new year! See below for more information!

MrASingh's previous art trail work

As you can see from the photos below, MrASingh is a contemporary artist who creates amazing textured mixed media artworks that seamlessly blend elements of nature with global cultures.

His work features mesmerising patterns and vibrant colours that garner attention from major brands and collectors. Consequently, his art is sold globally with a growing fanbase of advocates.

With over 40 sculptures dotting the landscape of the UK, MrASingh has played a pivotal role in raising more than £170,000 for charitable causes. His commitment extends beyond art, as he utilises his social media platforms and content to shed a positive light on the invaluable work of these charities.

As an ardent arts and culture advocate, he inspires the next generation, inviting everyone to embrace their creativity and curiosity while championing diversity.

How much is it to participate?

The art trail is free to everyone. However, we kindly ask you to donate money for your map and to download the app if you can. That way, we can keep these amazing art trails going as well as fundraise for Break.

Is there a map?

Yes, there is a Cambridge Standing Tall map. You can download this on the official app or on Break’s website when it is released. Alternatively, you can pick up a physical map. The suggested donation for a physical map is £1.

Can I become a trail ranger (volunteer)?

You can! A Trail Ranger is someone who will help look after the sculptures throughout the 10 weeks as part of a group. Responsibilities include cleaning the sculptures and reporting any damages.

Break are always on the lookout for people who want to volunteer their time. For more information on how to get involved, please contact Break.
