Another Xerox Iridesse Production Press for Kellmatt

Kellmatt has just installed its second Xerox Iridesse Production Press, boosting its digital print offer and reducing its energy bills relative to its old iGen 4.

First Copy is delighted to support Kellmatt to upgrade devices once again, the latest installment in a relationship spanning fifteen years.

Why did Kellmatt switch out their iGen 4 for another Iridesse?

Over the years, all Kellmatt’s digital print has been done on Xerox machines, as Director Matt Weir and his team have found them to be the best fit for meeting ever-increasing customer demand. When the time came to upgrade, it was Xerox that remained the top choice.

First Copy, meanwhile, provides a level of service that supports the Kellmatt team to maintain their machines and keep the business running. Matt has also found that a lease model via a supplier works very well; having the machines on a five-year cycle means he can upgrade the set-up as technology advances, and First Copy takes away the hassle of removing the old device.

In regard to machines, the COVID-19 lockdown period gave Matt the opportunity to look more closely at how the business was running and to assess the workflow and efficiency of their digital presses.

When the iGen was switched off during the lockdowns, Matt and the team immediately noticed the difference in their electricity bill! Until the pandemic, Kellmatt was running three Xerox machines; a Nuvera, an Iridesse and an iGen. The work through lockdown was easily managed across the Iridesse (including the use of Xerox’s gold and silver toners) and Nuvera: the planning began for a new device.

Energy consumption and digital print

It’s more important than ever to keep energy bills low and ensure machines are viable. In addition, Kellmatt is committed to implementing environmental best practices wherever possible, so Matt Weir, Director, and Laurie Ryan (Kellmatt’s First Copy Account Manager) decided the best option was to remove the iGen and replace it with an additional Iridesse.

The print room workflow required the same quality output as the existing Iridesse, plus the Iridesse’s ability to print on long sheets makes it a comparable alternative to the iGen, so the second machine was a clear choice.

Super-deduction and 2022 tax reliefs

Matt had already looked into how the government’s tax ‘super-deduction’ (which provided an allowance of 130% on most new machinery investments to help support businesses post-lockdown) could help him upgrade other machinery in the business, so Laurie was more than happy to discuss how it could be used via First Copy to revamp the digital press set up.

Established in 1991, Kellmatt has spent the last 31 years growing into the all-around specialists for design and print that they are today.

While Kellmatt started out printing self-adhesive labels for VHS tapes, Matt describes how the diversification of products has been the key to the company’s survival. Kellmatt will take your project from ‘conception to completion’; customers can now take an idea or requirement to the team, and they will take it from design all the way through to print, finishing and processing, and even distribution; all whilst maintaining their family-based principles.

Based in Borehamwood, Kellmatt is made up of a team of design and print specialists who embody those family principles, as the majority of the team have been with the company for upwards of 12 years and have built their careers there.

Kellmatt extends the family approach to their customers, as they are very much ingrained in their local community, with long-standing relationships with many customers.

Surviving pandemic business disruption

The company made sure to continue that level of customer service through the pandemic, as Matt and his team kept Kellmatt up and running throughout the COVID lockdown.

This included print work for their customers in the charity sector, producing materials to support children receiving treatment in hospital, and Matt also oversaw the production and delivery of material for the local Jewish community, as they were unable to come together for key celebrations. Kellmatt was also involved in printing signage and floor markers for businesses and schools to help keep customers and students safe once doors re-opened – the company even helped distribute hand sanitiser!
